Artists
•What is an artist and what do they do?
•An artist can be someone who makes a living from creating art or who creates art because they like it or it is fun.
•People who are writers and performers, of music, dance and acting, are also called artists.
•The term ‘artist’ can also be applied to those in other professions, such as architects, and artists who work in the applied and decorative arts.
•Those artists who work in a visual way that includes the practices of painting, drawing, sculpting, photography and printmaking are called visual artists or fine artists.•They can work in a range of mediums such as oil, acrylic or water paint, ceramics, clay metal, stone or any other natural or found material, pens or markers, coloured or graphite pencils, pastels or crayons, charcoal or inks, just to name a few.
•How artists have used these mediums over time and whatever image they have decided to create, has constantly changed over centuries. Many of the images that were made hundreds of years ago were not recognized or made as ‘art’.
•There is no doubt artists and the art they create will continue to change in the future with new and different art forms, such as digital art that is evolving thanks to changing technology.
•It is the visual artists that we have included in this Education Kit.
