People from different places
•People from other countries and other cultures make interesting subject matter for artists as they may look different, dress different, decorate themselves differently and live in different ways. They will have different customs, behave differently and live in different types of places.
•To many artists people from different places will seem exotic, perhaps unusual and artists, who are always looking for ways to express themselves in their art, may find the way people from different places express themselves visually interesting. Many artists travelled abroad for these reasons.
•The French artist Paul Gauguin travelled to different places such as Panama, Martinique, Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands where he lived for several years. His art and subject matter was very much influenced by the different places he went. When he did return to France Gauguin’s new style of painting and use of colours and subject matter influenced artists in France in the late 1800s when art from other cultures was becoming popular.
•The art of people from places such as Africa, Micronesia and Native America, characterised by exaggerated body proportions, animal totems, geometric designs and stark contrasts fascinated artists such as Picasso and Monet who were intrigued and educated by the newness, wildness and the stark power embodied in the art of those people from different faraway places.
•The influence of art by or about people from different places led to experimentation by European artists, new ways of seeing things, new ideas and new ways of using materials as well as new functions for art.
•Traditional art was disbanded and abstraction and the emergence of what is called Modern Art, influenced by people from different places and artists travelling to different places, changed art forever in the late 1800s.
