Art Making Activities
Activity 1: Designing sports gear
Design a range of clothes that could be worn when involved in sport activities such as basketball, tennis, cricket, and football. Pay attention to the colours and patterns used.
Activity 2: Drawing winners and losers
Using chalk or oil pastels draw 2 faces side by side – the first face illustrates the facial expressions of someone who has just won a sporting game and the second illustrates the same person but in this case they have lost the game. Focus on the facial expressions and emotions.
Activity 3: Textures in mixed media
Explore textures by gluing sand on cardboard. Can you make a picture using sand? Look at other textures including feathers, foam, plastic and wood and make some objects that you would find at the beach in the same picture
Activity 4: The school playground tissue collage
Look closely at the artwork School is Out by Ethel Spowers. The artist has captured lots of movement and emotion in her work. Observe other children playing in your own school playground- what kinds of games or actions are they involved in? Now try to select a favourite playground scene and do a rough sketch of your ideas. When you are ready cover a larger piece of white paper with a dark coloured tissue paper- like deep green or purple- and glue it in place. Using white tissue (or different light colour tissue) cut or tear the figures and shapes you will need to complete the scene in your original sketch. Glue these in place when you have assembled all the bits, As a final touch you can use a black biro or felt tip pen to show the lines and details.
