People at Rest
When artists draw or paint people they require the sitter to remain still for several hours. Could you sit still for several hours without moving around? When people are sitting or lying down they make good models for artists to draw and paint.
People at rest are a popular subject matter for artists. Artists such as Watteau, Boucher, Lancret and van Loo based their works on the idylls of a Golden Age, showing people relaxing in shady woods or beautiful parks.
Artists today find ways to show people at rest in different ways. This can be by using different mediums, from pencils to paint to photography.
Painting people resting adds a certain spontaneity to the work, as if the artists has come across them by accident and they have to capture them quickly before they move or wake up.
The following works by some well known artists show people at rest; David Hockney, Model With Unfinished Self-Portrait, 1977 and Sleeping La Grande Jatte, 1884-6 by Georges Seurat.
