People at rest
Art Making Activities

Activity 1: Wet ink/washes: Create a restful garden space
Wet art paper by brushing or sponging on clean water. Then drop coloured inks on the wet paper and watch the ink spread. Think about making loose shapes and squiggles that could become plants, trees, bushes, flowers, bugs, etc. Use small amounts of colour at a time and drop gently onto the wet paper.
Tip: it might be a good idea to use complementary colours like red and green, or blue and yellow. You could also add white paint or ink to lighten up the colours.

Activity 2: Continuous line drawing- people at rest (Stage 3 students)
Ask someone to pose lying down on top of a table. Arrange them in the position you think would be interesting (maybe the could lie on their side and be resting on their elbow) and be sure that they feel comfortable staying in this position for at least 10 minutes. Using a pencil, draw the shape of the person (outside lines as well as lines showing clothing and other body features). Keep your eye on the model as much as possible and try to avoid lifting your pencil off your page. If you need a rest remember where you left off and start in the same place. Think of this like ‘taking a line for a walk’- the line will look a bit like a snail has been travelling around and leaving a trail behind them.

Activity 3: Cartoons in pencil or pen
Develop a short strip of cartoon images (maybe 5 frames) based on the artwork, Two Tramps. You should aim to tell a little story of what happened to the tramps just before or just after they were found lying down (as they are in the artwork).
