Different places
Art Making Activities

Activity 1: Create an international collage of different places.
What are some of the places you think about when you think of different countries? Do some research to find famous locations in different parts of the world. For example, it could be the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the pyramids in Egypt or the Opera House in Sydney. Copy some Google images/photos of these places or find some in magazines and later cut them out to create a collage. Overlap the cut pictures to create an interesting composition. You could also add some pictures (or draw) speciality food items that belong to these countries.

Activity 2: Postcards of Imaginary places.
Imagine you have discovered a new place that no one has ever seen before. Discuss what this place is like with the partner nearest you. Then create a postcard ( a little larger than normal postcard size) using lightweight white cardboard and any materials of your choice to depict the scene. First cut the rectangle shape out of the card paper and on one side you will add the imaginary scene and on the other add the lines and text in black, red or blue pen showing the postage stamp, including a very short message to a friend about your discovery and the address of your friend (maybe someone in the class).

Activity 3: Antartica.
Refer to the painting called Discovery in the ‘different places’ art kit. Using the computer and a software program such as Kid Pix Deluxe (or something similar) create a computer generated image of a poster advertising a special historical travel tour to Antartica. You could include some mention of historical figures such as Douglas Shackelton who led expeditions to the South Pole. The advertisement for the tour could include pictures of explorer’s huts, equipment, or ships and early whaling sites. You might include penguins, fur seals and other wildlife found there. What words would you use to encourage people to come on the tour?
