Art Making Activities

Activity 1: Colours
Using the three primary colours red, yellow and blue. Experiment with combining these colours . What happens when you mix two colours together? Paint squares of each primary colour making the squares different sizes. Then mix two primary colours together to make a new colour and paint a square of that colour somewhere on the paper. Try overlapping some of the squares to see how the colours change. Repeat the process so that you mix each primary colour with each of the other primary colours to make new colours.

Activity 2: Shapes
Go for a nature walk and make a list of objects you find. See if you can find at least ten items to add to your list. Copy their shapes and then redraw them by changing their colours and making their shapes simpler. Decide on how you want the artwork to look by choosing a background colour for a large sheet of paper. It could be morning, afternoon or night, summer, spring, autumn or winter. Next cut out and rearrange your objects on the coloured background paper to make your own garden composition.

Activity3: Patterns
Cut out different shapes and strips of different thicknesses and lengths of coloured paper and patterned paper. Wrapping paper is good for this activity for make your own patterned paper with a pattern of your choice repeated over the whole paper. Place a large piece of plain white paper on the floor and allow the shapes and strips to fall randomly on the paper. Glue them down where they land to make your own picture based on ‘chance;.
