Things that people make :
Art Making Activities

Activity 1:Drawing (Stage 3)
Select a man made object to draw and then draw again using distortion. One way to approach this task in drawing is to create transformations. Think about a quick sketch like a comic strip format using four separate frames in sequence of one man made object slowly transforming into an animal or person through a series of four drawings. Eg Meat grinder transforms to a bird or a lamp transforms to a giraffe.

Activity 2: Photoshop (Stage 3)
Use Adobe Photoshop (filters) to distort/change a photograph of man made object (a structure like a bridge or a functional small object). Repeat the same object at least four times on the same page. This can be printed in black and white and then hand coloured using different contrasting colour combination (eg. Purple, yellow, green and red). Alternatively the colour can be added in Photoshop software and printed in colour.

Activity 3: 3D (Stage 1, 2 & 3 )
Read the Lost Thing written and illustrated by Shaun Tan. The Lost Thing is a weird combination of mechanical parts. Stage 2 and 3 students can create a 3D sculpture of your own imaginary ‘lost thing’ using box cardboard, scissors and glue. Stage one students could model a smaller ‘lost thing’ out of plasticine, play doh or clay. When the ‘lost thing’ is finished explain how it moves, what it does, where it belongs, how big it is, etc.

Activity 4: Collage (Stage 2)
Create a collage using b/w newspapers & overlay torn tissue paper for the background design. Then trace with pencil around one or two small mechanical objects or tools (garden tools, hammer, screwdrivers, etc) onto solid colour papers (brenex squares). Cut out these colour shapes out with scissors and play around with the placement of shapes on the background collage before gluing them in place.
