La Serva Padrona
11:30am SUNDAY 3rd AUGUST 2008.

Two servants, a cup of hot chocolate, and a bloodless rebellion: these are the ingredients of Blue Bottle Productions newest comic opera offering; Pergolesi’s ‘La Serva Padrona’.
A wealthy landowner, Uberto, having immigrated to Australia and purchased a ranch, finds himself fighting a losing battle as he tries to assert his authority in his own house. Trivial as it may seem, the maid, Serpina, refuses to bring him his morning cup of hot chocolate. Add to this a mute man-servant Vespone with divided allegiances and what you get is a delightful, if at times revealing display of what happens when the social classes mix.
For its Australian premiere, Scott Blick has set the piece in Australia in the late 1800s, a time when the Australian class system was being redefined.
In keeping with their other productions, La Serva Padrona will be performed in colloquial English making the piece more accessible to audiences of all ages, whether seasoned lovers of opera or total novices. Two singers, an actor and a pianist bring the story to life in a staging that is both refreshing and fast-moving. With the help of local soprano Samantha Cobcroft in the role of Serpina, and accompanying by local pianist Wendy Huddleston the piece is sure to delight.
