Wayzgoose 2018 Workshop: BIG, BOLD and in your FACE’ using letterpress text in posters with Cynthia Marsh

BIG, BOLD and in your FACE

Using Letterpress text in posters

with Cynthia Marsh

10.00AM – 4.30PM

Wood type & posted notices are the last bastions of democracy & free speech — personal ideas posted in public settings. The expression “Big Bold and In Your Face,”  can summon a joke, a cry for justice, an insult, a religious epiphany, or a treatise on modern advertising. “Big & Bold” will investigate the historic purposes of the Wimble Large Type Collection and follow the ascent of oversized wood type into the visual lexicon of contemporary art. Then we will roll-up our sleeves and get to work.

Cynthia Marsh

This workshop will explore the potential of working with large scale wooden type from the F.T Wimble collection to create posters with a message and impact. Each participant will each typeset and print one loud word on one big poster — a golden opportunity to let the world know exactly what is on your mind.

Dr Cynthia Marsh recently retired as the director of the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. Marsh was a founding member of the Women’s Graphic Center at the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles, California and professor of printmaking and design at California State University, Northridge from 1978 – 1992, served as the chair of Communication Arts at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles from 1992‐95. In the 1990s, Marsh founded the Goldsmith Press and Rare Type Collection, an important resource and teaching environment for students, visiting artists, and community members.
