Creative Bookmaking: Concertina and Coptic Binding
Two Day workshop
Saturday 29 April and Sunday 30 April 2017
10.00am – 4.30pm
@ NERAM, Armidale
Concertina binding is one of the most versatile of book structures incorporating a folded spine, many or few sections, soft or hard covers and many variations to pages and structure leading to many exciting sculptural effects. It is an ideal structure for beginners or more experienced book artists. Coptic binding is a very old form of bookbinding, dating from about the fourth century AD.
In this two day workshop students shall explore a variation of Coptic binding. This will produce a hard covered, multi-section book where the sewing forms attractive chains across the exposed spine. This book form is very versatile and is ideal for journals, sketchbooks etc. Participants will be encouraged to use a variety of papers to create individual books and to explore the sculptural qualities of books as well as using them as containers for images, text, poetry resources, memorabilia, etc.
