Old Tom Entranced: Leigh Hobbs (5 May – 18 June 2017)

Leigh Hobbs Old Tom 2010. Hand-coloured etching.

Old Tom Entranced is an exhibition of illustrations by artist and author Leigh Hobbs, and coincides with the New England Writers Centre’s Booked-In Festival.
Born in Melbourne in 1953, Leigh Hobbs is most known for the over 20 published children’s books that he has written and illustrated featuring his beloved characters Old Tom, Horrible Harriet, Fiona the Pig, Mr Badger, The Freaks in 4F and Mr Chicken. As the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2016 – 2017, Hobbs aims to “champion creative opportunities for children,” a goal that NERAM shares and hopes to achieve with their exhibition and connected public programs. ‘Old Tom Entranced’ will display 6 hand-coloured etchings by Hobbs depicting Old Tom, the sneaky and sly orange cat, engaged in various actions. Over the course of the exhibition Story Times will be held that will invite children to discover Leigh Hobbs’ characters for the first time, or to re-connect with their favourite literary fiends.
