About Helen Dangar

Helen Dangar (1944-2015) was an accomplished academic at the University of New England and teacher who taught French at the New England Girls School for twenty years where she was Head of Modern Languages and Coordinator of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Helen was very passionate about art, music and literature and took a great interest in the artistic wellbeing of the Armidale community. She and her family have been great supporters of the New England Regional Art Museum both financially and in person.

Both Helen and Bill Dangar donated many hours as volunteers at NERAM in a number of roles and the family home and its art collection were open to the community on many occasions to support NERAM fundraising activities.  Helen died in 2015 at the age of 71 after having fought cancer for many years. She led an active life almost to the end and her passing left an enormous gap in the community.

The Helen Dangar Memorial Arts Bursary celebrates her contribution and creates a lasting memorial to a much-missed person who gave so much energy and vitality to the New England Regional Art Museum and the cultural life of Armidale and the wider region.

Bursary Process

The Helen Dangar Memorial Art Bursary is being established with funds from Bill Dangar and the Dangar family, Friends of NERAM Inc and your donations.

The Helen Dangar Memorial Art Bursary funds will be administered as a sub-fund by the NERAM Foundation with income generated from the fund used to cover the annual costs of the bursary and its administration. NERAM Foundation will make available 80% of the annual interest from the Bursary Fund’s capital for this purpose. The aim is to provide an annual bursary of between $1500-2000 to an artist each year.

The administration of the Helen Dangar Memorial Art Bursary is managed by the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM), who are responsible for calling for applications, convening the selection panel, announcing successful applicants and disbursing funds.  Successful applicants will need to provide NERAM with a report about the funded activity after its completion and acknowledge NERAM and the bursary in any promotions, media or outcomes.
