Seven Asian Contemporary Brushwork Artists and Their Artwork

A Talk by Patricia (Trish) Petersen

Patricia Petersen is an artist and educator who has had a lifelong interest in Asian Brushwork art. This interest led to her completing a Masters of Letters on Zen brushwork painting and later in 2019, researching seven significant contemporary Asian brushwork artists by visiting them in their countries – Singapore, China and Japan.

This talk summarises the insights that were gained from these acclaimed artists about their artworks in their spaces, and thus the context, in which they were created. The talk aims to assist people to gain a better understanding and knowledge of contemporary Asian brushwork painting through what these artists said about their art practice, through seeing high quality photos of their artwork, by viewing an original painting by Nannan Tang, and by looking through their exhibition catalogues. After the talk, Patricia will demonstrate Asian brushwork and the audience can see how the ink and rice paper work their magic.

The artists the talk is focused on are: Tay Bak Chiang and Shih Yun Yeo from Singapore, Jian-Jun Zhang and Tang Nannan from China, and Kiyo Hasegawa, Nakajima Hiroyuki and Christine Flint-Sato from Japan.
