This an opportunity for primary aged children to learn how to draw portraits from artist Rhonda Ellem, please see below of what children will learn on the day. At the end of the workshop students can submit their works into the Young Archie Competition at NERAM. If the student wishes to do this then please ensure to complete the Young Archie Entry Form prior to the workshop as a parents signature is required. Printed copies will be available on the day.

Experience being a portrait artist in the Packsaddle studio, learning to draw the shapes and character of a face. Artists in the Archibald paint their subjects from a number of sittings. This is called ‘painted from life’. We can’t do that in the studio, but you can have fun drawing and painting from a photo. What makes that face in your photo different to other faces? Why did you choose your subject (person)? How do you draw their nose sticking out from their face?

Then a special visit upstairs to the gallery to be surrounded by the big and little portraits in the Archibald Prize 2021. Find out who the winners are. Look for some of the very unexpected additional subject matter in some of the Archibald portraits. What else has been added to the portraits and why are they there? Who is Penguin Bloom?

Think about some of these ideas and then head back to the studio to begin your final portrait. We’ll work together to make a word list, then up to you to draw important shapes, add detail, shade and colour to your special portrait.

The portrait should be of a person who is special to you, someone who is known to you and plays a significant role in your life. You’ll need to bring hard copy photo/s of that special person to the workshop, preferably photo/s that you’ve taken, frontal, profile, candid or otherwise.
