The Howard Hinton Collection: Bring the iconic Howard Hinton collection to life. The Howard Hinton Collection at the New England Regional Art Museum is the result of one of the greatest acts of artistic philanthropy and benefaction in Australian history. Between 1928 and 1948 a collection of over 1000 artworks by leading Australian artists were donated to the newly constructed Armidale Teachers’ College by the retired shipping agent, Howard Hinton OBE (1867-1948). The Collection provides a snapshot into Australian artistic practice in the early twentieth century. To view the collection online click here
We invite students to ‘talk to the paintings’ in Howard Hinton’s collection with a themed tour delivered by a gallery educator.
Students will see a minimum of three paintings as part of their facilitated visit. These sessions are designed to build confidence and enjoyment in looking at and responding to paintings. Through questioning and structured activities, Gallery educators will help improve their observational skills and discuss their findings.
The paintings selected will give an overview of the time frame, genres and themes included in the Hinton collection. Students will explore styles, content and techniques developing their knowledge and skills to start exploring on their own!
