Inspired by the current exhibition by Myf Gullifer and her unique soft sculptures, NERAM invites students to explore the softer side of artmaking in a ‘stuff and stitch’ workshop.
About Myfanwy Gullifer: Myfanwy Gullifer studied drama at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne. After performing and working on production sets making theatrical props, she realised she much preferred the ‘intuitive engagement of creating things’ (Gulllfer, 2019). Myf Gullifer is known now for her brightly coloured sculptures which draw on domestic life, ‘extending its absurdities, playing with humour and the inner wanderings of her mind’. In this exhibition Myf showcases her soft sculptures which are made from paper-mache, recycled blankets and clay.

Description of activity:
After a guided tour through the art museum by our arts educator, students are invited into analyse and discuss the idea of soft sculpture. Looking at Pop-art sculptor, also known as the ‘creator of soft sculpture’ Claes Oldenburg’s work, students are prompted to discuss the idea of traditional sculpture with strength and permanence in comparison to a soft sculpture which may be less permanent in both structure and materials.
In a studio session to follow, students will then create their own soft sculptures based on everyday life. Working in small scale students will develop test models in paper followed by 3D models using selected methods of either hand-stitched, clay or papier mâché sculptures. Students will work with chance as they experiment with their unique 3D everyday objects.
