DESCRIPTION:Experience one of the greatest collections of art in regional Australia with the new semi-permanent display\, Wonders of Hinton. \nThe Howard Hinton Collection is the result of one of the greatest acts of artistic philanthropy and benefaction in Australian history. Between 1929 and 1948 a collection of over 1000 artworks were donated to the newly constructed Armidale Teachers’ College by the retired shipping agent\, Howard Hinton OBE (1866-1948). DESCRIPTION:Open Air Gallery Exhibition \nThe Howard Hinton Collection is one of the most significant collections of Australian art held outside a capital city\, formed through the extraordinary generosity of patron Howard Hinton. Between 1928 and 1948\, Hinton donated over 1\,000 artworks to the Armidale Teachers’ College with a clear vision: to create a collection that would illustrate the development of Australian art and make it accessible for education and public enjoyment. \nWithin this broader ambition\, portraiture plays a vital role. Alongside landscapes and still life\, portraits offer a different kind of record\, not of place\, but of people. They capture likeness\, character\, status and identity\, while also revealing the sensibilities of the artist and the cultural values of their time. In the Hinton Collection\, portraiture reflects a formative period in Australian art\, when artists were negotiating both inherited European traditions and an emerging national identity. \nThe ten works brought together in Faces from the Hinton Collection highlight the diversity of approaches to portraiture across this period. Some works emphasise physical resemblance and careful observation; others move toward mood\, atmosphere or psychological presence. Together\, they demonstrate how portraiture is not simply about depicting a sitter\, but about constructing meaning — a relationship between artist\, subject and viewer. \nAs you move through the exhibition\, these faces invite close looking. They ask us to consider not only who is represented\, but how and why. In doing so\, they continue Hinton’s original intention: to use art as a means of education\, reflection and connection across generations. \n  \nThe Armidale Open Air Gallery is a public art initiative presented by Armidale Regional Council in collaboration with New England Regional Art Museum. Designed to enrich the cultural landscape of the region\, this outdoor exhibition showcases a curated selectin of artworks in public spaces\, offering residents and visitors accessible and engaging visual arts experience. Artworks featured in the gallery will rotate on a six-monthly basis\, ensuring a continually refreshed display that reflects the diversity and creativity of local and regional artists. The initiative not only celebrates artistic excellence but also fosters community connection through the integration of art into everyday environments. \n

With no set theme this is an opportunity for artists and artisans to showcase their authentic creative voice without restriction. \nThis exhibition will include the opportunity for an artist’s work to be selected by committee for acquisition into the NERAM Collection. \nAcquisition sponsored by  \n \n40 works will be chosen by committee for display in the exhibition. SUMMARY:Unfamiliar Territory: Angus Nivison
DESCRIPTION:Unfamiliar Territory is a major survey exhibition celebrating five decades of practice by one of Australia’s most respected contemporary painters. Bringing together significant works from public and private collections alongside the artist’s own holdings\, the exhibition traces the evolution of Nivison’s deeply atmospheric and abstract engagement with the land. Based in Walcha in the New England region of New South Wales\, Nivison’s practice is grounded in place yet resists literal representation. His paintings operate within an abstract and affective register\, where landscape persists as an emotional and conceptual presence rather than a fixed image. Through layered surfaces\, subtle shifts of colour and immersive fields of mark-making\, the works invite viewers into experiences of ambiguity\, beauty and contemplation. \nMarking the largest solo exhibition of his work to date\, Unfamiliar Territory reveals an artist continually pushing the possibilities of abstraction while creating space for reflection\, memory and wonder to emerge through the act of looking. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnfamiliar Territory will exhibit at NERAM from the 31st of July until the 18th of October.\n\n\n\nOpening night will run from 6pm-8pm on Friday 31st July. DESCRIPTION:Fins\, Fetlocks & Feathers is an exhibition by Mornington Peninsula (VIC)–based artist Julie Edgar\, presenting an expressive collection of prints celebrating sea creatures\, horses\, and birds. While Edgar is widely recognised for her bronze portrait sculptures\, she is equally passionate about printmaking\, a technique central to this body of work. \nIn this exhibition birds feature prominently\, creatures that Julie feels a strong personal connection to\, many works inspired by the range of species that visit her studio. DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\nBoundaries: Transcended celebrates the work of hundreds of people who came together to build tiny ceramic homes celebrating the resettlement of refugees in the Hunter Valley. Now presented at NERAM\, these small-scale structures speak to broader regional conversations about place\, identity\, and what it means to build a home in a new environment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeople built traditional huts from Ghana\, apartments from India\, and humpies from Australia – to name just a few. Others built tents or caravans\, reminding us that all kinds of structures can be a home. Some people build future focused buildings – the architecturally designed home they hoped for when they finished their degree or Australia’s Parliament House – representing the final step on their migration journey: citizenship. For others\, home was not necessarily a house. Temples from Cambodia\, Japan\, and India sit alongside mosques from Mecca and churches from Vietnam. \nThe 700 tiny houses embody individual’s journeys\, the journey of their ancestors\, and the process of building a community. Clay is part of our shared cultural heritage; it unites diverse people in unexpected ways and connects us in ways we may not always know we share. Pottery helps us understand how people\, ideas\, and things move across the globe. \nThis exhibition encourages you to think about the connections we create as we journey through life and build a community together. \n\n  \nThis exhibition is being presented as part of the Winter Blooming Festival\nWinter Blooming has been Produced in collaboration with Armidale Regional Council\, University of New England\, Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council\, and ACON. \n                   \n\n\n\n\n

They toured the New England Regional Art Museum with Director Rachael Parsons\, gaining insight into the region’s cultural context through both gallery and collection encounters. Conversations with local artists from Armidale and Walcha further grounded their experience in the lived realities of regional practice. SUMMARY:Paper Craft Flying Magpie Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Experience the fun of crafting an impressive 3D geometric paper magpie sculpture! This will be a rewarding project for animal lovers and will be shown at both the Creative Streets and Black Gully Festivals — the magnificent magpie being the latter festival’s mascot. \n  \nWhat is Paper Craft?\nLow poly paper craft is a 3D physical art form made of flat paper polygons and straight creases. It mimics digital “low polygon” 3D computer graphics by reducing complex organic shapes into faceted geometric structures. \n  \nWhat to expect?\nThe workshop is 3 hours long and is medium difficulty with cutters and super glue being used. Starting with a flat printed 2D pattern containing numbered tabs\, solid cut lines\, and dotted fold lines. The maker by cutting out the pieces\, score the folds\, and glue matching numbers together sequentially will create a rigid\, angular geometric sculpture. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you will create your own artwork on a 40 x 40 cm wooden panel. The focus is not on achieving a perfect final piece\, but on discovering and enjoying the creative process. Through playful experimentation\, you’ll learn that having fewer choices can often open up more possibilities. \nUsing small templates and water-diluted acrylic paints\, we’ll build up layers and patterns step by step. After a short lunch break\, you’ll be introduced to a batik-inspired technique that creates beautiful and often surprising effects on the wooden panel. The workshop encourages curiosity\, exploration\, and letting go of expectations about what your artwork should become. For those who would like to dive deeper into the techniques and possibilities\, Jeannette will also share several of her own paintings as examples and inspiration. \nJeannette Kommer\, the artist behind Mohani Art\, graduated from Minerva Art Academy in the Netherlands in 1998. DESCRIPTION:Join two of Australia’s leading art writers and historians\, Christopher Allen and Sasha Grishin\, for a lively conversation exploring the role of art criticism in today’s Australian art scene and its relevance to the visual arts in regional Australia. \nBoth speakers bring decades of experience writing\, researching and thinking about Australian art. Sasha Grishin began his career as an art critic in 1977\, when he was appointed Senior Art Critic for The Canberra Times\, a position he held for 46 years. He continues to write as Art Critic for Region Media and contributes regularly to a range of Australian art publications. Christopher Allen has been writing for The Australian since 2008 and is a respected art historian\, writer and educator. He has written and edited several books\, including Art in Australia\, and is a passionate advocate for the significance of Australian art history. \nBoth Grishin and Allen have played an important role in documenting\, interpreting and shaping conversations around Australian art. Their work as critics sits alongside their contributions as historians and authors\, reflecting the enduring relationship between art criticism and art history. As the saying goes\, “art criticism is the first draft of art history.” \nThe evening will feature presentations from both speakers\, followed by a moderated conversation and audience Q&A. \n  \n\nDr Christopher Allen is an art critic and historian. A graduate of the University of Sydney\, Christopher has worked at the Collège de France in Paris and the National Art School\, and is currently Senior Master in Academic Extension at Sydney Grammar School. He is the author of Art in Australia from Colonisation to Postmodernism (1997)\, French Painting in the Golden Age (2003) and several other books\, including Jeffrey Smart: Unpublished Paintings 1940-2007 (2008). He was art critic of the Australian Financial Review from 2005 to 2008 and since 2008 has been national art critic for The Australian. \nSasha Grishin AM\, FAHA\, is the author of more than 30 books on art\, including Australian Art: A History\, and has served as the senior art critic for The Canberra Times for forty-six years between 1977 and 2023. He is an Emeritus Professor at the Australian National University\, Canberra\, and has served as Guest Curator at the National Gallery of Victoria and the State Library of Victoria. DESCRIPTION:Two workshops for the price of one! Solve (age appropriate) mysteries with UNE Discover\, then enjoy a tour of the gallery and an abstract art-making session. \nEver wonder how detectives solve crimes? It’s not that different from how scientists find answers to questions about the universe: piecing together clues to find the bigger picture! \nThis activity will engage children with age-appropriate mysteries for them to solve\, using clues\, tools\, and critical thinking. Kids will be introduced to a range of different techniques that detectives and forensic scientists use\, including matching fingerprints and footprints\, identifying different chemicals using their unique properties\, pollen analysis\, blood typing\, as well as some good old logic and reasoning. \nWhether figuring out the fate of Kassie the Koala\, or identifying who paint-bombed the school\, this activity has a range of exciting and hands-on experiments for participants to work through while solving the mystery. \nFollowing this\, attendees will get a short tour of the art gallery\, focussing on Angus Nivison’s Unfamiliar Territory exhibition. SUMMARY:Fractured Sanctuary: Ken O'Regan
DESCRIPTION:Fractured Sanctuary is a luminous meditation on beauty\, waste and the sacred. Ken O’Regan transforms hundreds of discarded plastic objects into a glowing\, kaleidoscopic composition inspired by the rose windows of medieval cathedrals\, Victorian leadlight and the neon signs of contemporary commerce. Seductive and unsettling in equal measure\, the work elevates the everyday while confronting the environmental cost of our culture of consumption. \n\nAbout the artist\nFor over twenty years artist Ken O’Regan has developed sculptural practices that combine found object assemblage with environmental themes. His practice has involved producing large installations that visually echo museums\, stained glass windows\, mandalas and neon signage. His work frequently uses light to make these references\, and this has extended his practice into the area of sculptural lantern making. \nO’Regan’s work is well known in the Hunter Region of NSW through regular and critically successful exhibitions\, community art projects\, public artworks and education projects. He has created many successful workshops for children that combine art education with waste reduction and recycling message. His artworks are represented in the collections of Newcastle Region Art Gallery\, Wallsend District Library\, The University of Newcastle and in many private collections. \n\nOpening Night: Fri 2nd October from 6pm-8pm. SUMMARY:UNE Discovery: Creative Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:Ever wanted to tap into your inner chemist? Here’s your chance! In this activity\, students will don lab coats and mix unknown substances into bubbling concoctions and colour changing creations. \nParticipants in this workshop will investigate the outcomes of different chemical reactions\, and how they relate to our every-day lives. Using their understanding of chemistry built within the lesson\, students will seek to identify unknown substances\, and experiment to explore chemical and physical interactions. They will then create colourful explosions to examine different chemical properties from pH to phase changes\, thermal interactions of substances\, gas production and precipitation\, and use an investigative approach to predict\, observe and explain what we behold. \nFollowing this\, participants will get a short tour of the art gallery\, focussing on Angus Nivison’s Unfamiliar Territory exhibition. Then\, we’ll be creating a mini abstract artwork inspired by the paintings of Angus Nivison\, which children can take home with them. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the exhibition Boundaries: Transcended \nWhat does home mean to you? \nExplore the hundreds of tiny ceramic homes in NERAM’s Boundaries: Transcended exhibition\, then create a special little house of your own in this hands-on school holiday workshop. \nBoundaries: Transcended brings together 700 tiny ceramic structures created by people from many different cultural backgrounds. From traditional huts and apartments to tents\, caravans\, temples and imagined dream homes\, each tells a story about place\, identity\, belonging and the idea of home. \nAfter exploring the exhibition together\, participants will design and build their own miniature house using air-dry clay. Your house might be inspired by somewhere you live or have lived\, a place that is special to your family\, a dream home for the future—or somewhere completely imaginary! \nExperiment with shape\, texture and pattern as you add windows\, doors\, roofs and other tiny architectural details to make your house uniquely yours. \nDesigned for ages 10+\, this workshop is also open to parents\, grandparents and carers who would like to create alongside their young person. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the stimulus of doing art in a group. \nWhile individual guidance comprises the main bulk of the class\, Kerry will also be doing regular demonstrations on anything related to painting and drawing\, such as collage\, paint transfer\, frottage\, sgraffito\, dry brushing\, stencilling\, and more. If you are new to art\, Kerry can help you get started on the basics\, such as looking at line\, colour\, perspective. \nYou are welcome to join the class no matter what your skill levels are. If you are unsure of the how to begin\, just turn up on the first day and Kerry will help determine the best approach for you. \nThe class is quite casual\, with many of the ongoing students working on their own projects\, taking guidance as needed. \nKerry Gulliver is a skilled artist and educator who has exhibited regularly in Armidale\, Sydney\, and Tamworth.
