Batik Printing | School Holiday Workshop

July 13, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Currently on show, is exhibition Three Echoes – Western Desert Art showcasing works by 57 acclaimed artists heralding from Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff), Papunya and Utopia Aboriginal communities in the western desert regions of the Northern Territory.

To celebrate the beautiful Batik prints in this exhibition, we invite children to investigate the process of Batik Printing. Batik is an Indonesian method of decorating cloth by applying hot wax to the surface as a resistance to the dyes. The process can be repeated several times, adding to the richness of the designs, creating layering after each different coloured dye bath.

In this workshop, facilitator Jo West will take children through the exhibition Three Echoes outlining Batik Printing’s origins and connection to Western Desert Art. To follow students will complete a Batik Printing workshop when participants will substitute hot wax for glue, experimenting with shapes and colours from native flora and fauna. Students are able to take home their artwork as a wall hanging.

This is a hands-on messy workshop so please make sure your children are dressed appropriately. Please also pack a snack & water bottle for your child to have during their workshop break.
