In this creative workshop, children will explore the famous Japanese artwork The Great Wave off Kanagawa (1831) by artist Katsushika Hokusai. After looking closely at the shapes, movement and colours in the artwork, children will create their own interpretation using watercolour painting and collage techniques.
Students will begin by painting a background wash with watercolours to create sky and ocean tones. They will then build the dramatic wave shapes using torn and layered recycled papers and other recycled material experimenting with colour, texture and composition to capture the energy of the sea.
Each artwork will be unique, encouraging children to respond creatively to the original image while exploring sustainable artmaking with recycled materials.
