Description of Activity:
Part 1: Investigating the history of printing. There are many fascinating pieces of printing machinery at NERAM’s Museum of Printing but what do they do? What did the printing process look like before the invention of computers? Hopscotch Press has created an education booklet which explains how these machines work along with the history of printing plus fun activities to do in the classroom.
Part 2: Art-Making. Students are encouraged to discover the original letterpress process featured in the Museum of Printing through lego printing. Using a base plate and lego tiles students can manipulate shapes for relief printing without carving. The moveable lego tiles closely resemble the movable type of letterpress while also allowing iterative design changes and problem-solving. Re-create some of the abstract artworks from the NERAM collection in your design, click here to view the works to recreate.
