In 2021, The Archibald Prize celebrated 100 years as Australia’s oldest and most loved portraiture prize. NERAM is showcasing this touring exhibition in its 100th year from the 13th of May until 26th June.
About the Archibald Prize:
The Archibald Prize, first awarded in 1921, is the country’s favourite art award, and one of its most prestigious. Awarded to the best portrait painting, it’s a who’s who of Australian culture – from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists. Prestigious and controversial, the Archibald Prize was first awarded in 1921 following a bequest from former Art Gallery trustee JF Archibald to foster portraiture, support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians.
The open competition has been awarded annually to the best portrait, ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in arts, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’.

Bring your students along to experience the Archibald Prize 2021 first hand. On tour at NERAM from the 13th May – 26th June students are able to receive a guided tour from an arts educator followed by an optional portraiture workshop. Students are then able to submit their portrait to go into the Young Archie competition.
This program is suitable for all stages of learning including early learners.
Young Archie Competition
To coincide with this popular exhibition, there will be a Young Archie exhibition at NERAM from the 15th June – 26th July, made up of portraits by children aged 5-18 years submitted from local schools/families.
The Young Archie provides a showcase for portraits created by our young New England student artists. We invite your school to participate!
Students are invited to make their own individual portraits of someone who is special to them and to make these portraits from life, by doing a ‘sitting’ with the person, making sketches, and/or taking photographs and working from them as artists do in the Archibald Prize artworks.
There will be a prize awarded in each age category sponsored by ANZ Bank, presenting partner of the Archibald Prize 2021.
