Opportunity for artists to accelerate their career

NERAM is calling for applications to the 2019 Helen Dangar Memorial Bursary.

The annual bursary awards $1,500 to an artist from the New England Region to undertake a professional or creative development activity. The bursary may be used to participate in a workshop, masterclass, course or residency, that will positively impact the artist’s practice or develop their creative skills.

The Helen Dangar Memorial Art Bursary is open to artists residing in the New England region as defined as the Australian Electoral Commission Federal Division of New England boundaries and includes communities of Ashford, Armidale, Barraba, Bingara, Glen Innes, Guyra, Inverell, Manilla, Murrurundi, Nundle, Quirindi, Tamworth, Tenterfield, Tingha, Walcha and Uralla.

“This is an opportunity for NERAM to support local artists to engage in a creative development opportunity and we encourage artists of all levels from emerging practitioners through to those well established to apply,” said Rachael Parsons, Art Museum Director at NERAM.

“This is the third year that we have offered the bursary. We have been delighted to have previously supported two artists, Lizzie Horne and Rita Winiger, in 2017 and 2018 to fund travel and tuition fees that have expanded both artists’ practice.”

Lizzie Horne used her bursary to partially fund travel and studio-based tuition in aluminium etching and waterless lithography at the Fondazione Il Bisonte studio in Florence, Italy in 2018. Rita Winiger will use her bursary in September this year to travel to the Larapinta Creative Camp outside of Alice Springs to paint the desert landscape and receive technical training.

“It has been wonderful to see the variety of creative activities that the bursary has been able to support,” said Rachael Parsons. “We look forward to seeing even more submissions in this current application round, and to seeing how the bursary can assist another regional artist to expand their creative skills or career experience.”

NERAM will host a Helen Dangar Memorial Art Bursary Application Information session on Thursday 15th August at 4.00pm, for anyone who has questions about their application. Artists are invited to bring along their activity ideas and any questions they have about the application form to the session and receive advice from NERAM staff and previous Bursary recipient, Rita Winiger.

The Helen Dangar Memorial Art Bursary was established in 2017 in memory of well-known Armidale arts supporter Helen Dangar (1944-2015) with the aim of supporting the New England region’s artists to advance in their career path.
